About Rochester

About Rochester, NY

Rochester has been a part of our lives since the first of two summers when Joe interned at Xerox through Ash's 6 year stint as a graduate student. While people do not often think of Rochester as an exciting destination, we have a found many things to love about this city and we'll use this page to clue you in to some of our favorites!

First of all, Rochester has it's own wiki: http://rocwiki.org/. This is a great resource for just about any information you might want to find about Rochester -- hotel and restaurant reviews, museums, and history of the city. They also have a Tourist Guide worth checking out: http://rocwiki.org/RocWiki_Tourists_Guide

Museums, etc.

Rochester has some excellent museums, art galleries, and historically interesting places. At the top of Ash's list is the Strong Museum of Play -- a museum totally dedicated to having fun! But these other places are pretty awesome, too:

Food

I would be remiss not to start the food section with a mention of Rochester's own culinary gem, the garbage plate. Seriously, it is delicious, but for the less adventurous eaters, we also recommend:

And, of course, you should all check out the Wegman's in Pittsford. Yes, it is a grocery store, but it's unlike any grocery store most of you have probably been inside. It has a warm food bar, plus The Food Bar -- a restaurant inside the grocery store, and The Tea Bar. And they own the Next Door Bar and Grill... which is next door (technically it's across the street). You have not had a complete Rochester experience unless you have visited Wegman's and this is the flagship location!

Day Trips

Rochester is also located near a few different day trip options. Located at the western end of the finger lakes, it is an easy drive to any of the lakes, all of which have many wineries and also make good locations for bike rides or generally enjoying the gorgeous views of the lakes.

Toronto is located just on the other side of Lake Ontario, which is just a few hour drive around the lake. Unfortunately there is not a ferry available to take you across... don't ask about it.

Niagara Falls is also just a couple of hours along I-90. Enjoy a ride on the Maid of the Mist, then make sure to stop in Buffalo for some real Buffalo wings at Duff's.
